"Writing" Letters in the Air on Shabbat

"Writing" Letters in the Air on Shabbat
Day: Sunday
Date: November 1, 2015
Parshat: Hayei Sarah
Yalkut Yosef: O"H: 340

In memory of Avraham Asher ben Tzadika

It is permissible on Shabbat to put together pieces of torn paper on order to read what's written on them. Doing so is not part of the writing which is forbidden on Shabbat. However, it is forbidden to glue or tape the pieces together. It is permissible to "write" letters in the air or on a dry table on Shabbat to signal to a person since doing so leaves no impression. However, it is forbidden to write letters on a wet or damp table since those letters do make an impression.

DSH is brought to you in memory of Rabbi Mordechai ben Daniel. Please visit us online at sephardichalacha.org
