Ikar and Tafel

Ikar and Tafel
Day: Friday
Date: June 17, 2016
Parshat: Naso
Yalkut Yosef: O"H: 212

In memory of Hannah bat Shelomo.

One who is eating a primary food, called an ikar, and with it a secondary food, called a tafel, says a beracha on the ikar only and not on the tafel. For example, one who eats a boreka or a danish says mezonot on the outside cake part only and no beracha on the filling. Likewise, one who eats cheese and crackers says a beracha on the crackers only and not on the cheese. This is true even if he doesn't put the cheese on the cracker but rather eats them separately. As long as his intention is for the cheese to go with the cracker it is considered tafel and no beracha is said.
