Answering Amen to a Child's Beracha

Answering Amen to a Child's Beracha
Day: Friday
Date: July 8, 2016
Parshat: Korah
Yalkut Yosef: O"H: 214

One who hears a child saying a beracha before eating or before doing a mitzvah may answer amen as long as the child is at least six years old and understands that he's saying a beracha to Hashem. However, one who hears children practicing or being taught to say berachot does not answer amen to them. If one is unsure whether the child is six years old or not he may also answer amen. One who answers amen to a five year old child has what to rely on as long as the child knows that he is saying the beracha to HaShem. To a child younger than six however, amen is not answered regardless. If the child does not know how to keep himself clean amen is not said in either situation.
