One who hears another person mumble a beracha does not answer amen if he can't tell which beracha the person said. However, if it is a beracha on food and he can see what food the person is holding and based on that he knows which beracha the person said, he may answer amen. Even if the person is holding food, it is still better to lean in and listen to know for sure which beracha is being said.
