The Obligation to Say Amen to Others' Berachot

The Obligation to Say Amen to Others' Berachot
Day: Monday
Date: July 4, 2016
Parshat: Korah
Yalkut Yosef: O"H: 214

One who heard a beracha said by a fellow Jew is required to answer amen even he didn't hear the full beracha and even if he has no obligation to say that particular beracha. However, if the one saying the beracha is an idol worshipper, amen is not said to his beracha. For our purposes this would include a Christian person. Likewise, if the one saying the beracha is an apikoros, such as a reform "Rabbi," amen is not said there either. If the person saying the beracha is not shomer Shabbat, amen is answered to his beracha. If the one saying the beracha left out Hashem's name or changed the beracha any other way amen is not said.
