One who is traveling either by car or by airplane for more than 72 minutes is required to say Tefillat Haderech. Tefillat Haderech should be said upon leaving the city but it is not necessary for one to travel a certain distance out of the city before saying it. One who forgot to say it at the beginning of his trip may say it as long as he hasn't yet reached his destination city. However, if he is within 72 minutes of the city he is traveling to, he should say it without the beracha. If one is not in a rush and he won't be in danger, it is better to stop and say it with kavana. However, if stopping will make him late, or is not practical, it is fine to say it while driving. Tefillat Haderech only needs to be said once per day even if one plans on making mutiple trips and even if there will be long gaps between each trip. However, if he intended to stay overnight and not travel anymore but then changed his mind, he does say it again even though he said it previously the same day.

DSH is brought to you in memory of Rabbi Mordechai ben Daniel. Please visit us online at SephardicHalacha.org
