One Who Intended to Say the Correct Beracha but Accidentally Ended Wrong

One Who Intended to Say the Correct Beracha but Accidentally Ended Wrong
Day: Tuesday
Date: May 31, 2016
Parshat: Behukotai
Yalkut Yosef: O"H: 209

In memory of Hannah bat Shelomo.

One who is about to drink something which is shehakol and when he started saying the beracha intended to correctly say shehakol but somehow accidentally said boreh pri hagefen, does not need to say a new beracha since at the time he said HaShem's name he had the right intention. However, if he realized right away that he said the wrong beracha he should quickly correct himself by saying the words "shehakol nihiya bidvaro."

One Who Hears Kedusha While Saying Me'en Shalosh

One Who Hears Kedusha While Saying Me'en Shalosh
Day: Monday
Date: May 30, 2016
Parshat: Behukotai
Yalkut Yosef: O"H: 208

In memory of Hannah bat Shelomo.

The beracha of me'en shalosh should be said while seated. However, one who said it while standing or even while walking has nevertheless fulfilled his obligation. Other berachot, including boreh nefashot and even the berachot we say before eating, may be said while standing. One who while saying me'en shalosh hears kaddish or kedusha may not interrupt his beracha to answer.

One Who Ate a Complete Food That is Less Than a Kezayit

One Who Ate a Complete Food That is Less Than a Kezayit
Day: Sunday
Date: May 29, 2016
Parshat: Behukotai
Yalkut Yosef: O"H: 208

In memory of Hannah bat Shelomo.

As mentioned previously there is a disagreement among the poskim whether a kezayit is 18 or 27 grams. There are also some poskim who maintain that one who ate a complete item, such as a grape, needs to say an after beracha even if the item is less than a kezayit. However, due to it being a safek no after beracha is said in that situation. One who ate between 18 and 27 grams of a food, putting him in safek, and then also ate something complete but less than a kezayit which puts him in a double safek, nevertheless does not say an after beracha in that case. An example would be one who ate a small amount, between 18 and 27 grams, of pomegranate seeds and also ate one olive. Even though there is a safek safeka, no after beracha is said.

Instances When Hagefen Covers Other Drinks as Well

Instances When Hagefen Covers Other Drinks as Well
Day: Friday
Date: May 27, 2016
Parshat: Behar
Yalkut Yosef: O"H: 208

As mentioned previously, (Feb. 5, 2016) the beracha of hagefen that is said on wine or grape juice covers other drinks as well and therefore one who drinks other drinks after having wine or grape does not say a beracha on those drinks. The same is true with regards to after berachot. Meaning, one who drank wine and also had other drinks which otherwise require boreh nefashot only says al hagefen on the wine. If at the time he said the beracha on the other drinks the wine was not yet present he still says al hagefen to cover both as long as the wine or grape juice was his main drink. However, if he only had a cup or other such small amount of wine then he still needs to say boreh nefashot if the wine was not there when he said shehakol on the other drinks.

One Who Had Wine and Now Wants to Eat Grapes

One Who Had Wine and Now Wants to Eat Grapes
Day: Thursday
Date: May 26, 2016
Parshat: Behar
Yalkut Yosef: O"H: 208

One who drank wine or grape juice and now wants to have grapes as well needs to say ha'etz on the grapes and he cannot rely on the beracha of hagefen that he said on the wine. However, if he accidentally said hagefen instead of ha'etz or if afterward he accidentally said al hagefen instead of al ha'etz, he has fulfilled his obligation to say the before and after berachot and does not subsequently say the proper beracha.

The After Beracha for One Who Ate a Kezayit and a Safek Kezayit of Another Food

The After Beracha for One Who Ate a Kezayit and a Safek Kezayit of Another Food
Day: Wednesday
Date: May 25, 2016
Parshat: Behar
Yalkut Yosef: O"H: 208

There is a disagreement among the Poskim whether a kezayit comes out to 18 grams or to 27 grams. Generally, for the purposes of after berachot and for netilat yadayim we consider a kezayit to be 27 grams. However, since it is a safek, one who ate a kezayit (27 grams) of mezonot and now requires me'en shalosh with the al hamihya insert can also add the al ha'etz insert if he had 18 grams of fruit of the shiv'at haminim. However if he had any less than 18 grams of the fruit he may not add the insert. Likewise, if he had a kezayit of mezonot and between a kezayit and a revi'it of wine he can also add the al hagefen insert to his al hamihya since there is a safek as well regarding an after beracha for one who drank that amount of liquid.

One Who Ate Some Fruits of and Some Fruits not of the Shivat Haminim

One Who Ate Some Fruits of and Some Fruits not of the Shivat Haminim
Day: Tuesday
Date: May 24, 2016
Parshat: Behar
Yalkut Yosef: O"H: 208

One who ate a kezayit worth of fruits of the shiv'at haminim and also ate a kezayit of other fruits or vegetables says al ha'etz and has in mind to include the non shiv'at haminim fruits as well. No boreh nefashot is said in that situation since, after all, the al ha'etz is an after beracha on fruits. For example, one who ate a kezayit of grapes and also ate a kezayit of apples or even half a kezayit each of apples and oranges, says al ha'etz on the grapes and includes the others in that beracha. However, if he is saying me'en shalosh for something other than fruits, such as wine or mezonot foods, and also ate non shiv'at haminim fruit, he first says boreh nefashot and then me'en shalosh. In this case the fruits cannot be included in the me'en shalosh since he is not saying the me'en shalosh for any fruits that would otherwise get that beracha.

The Proper Text of Al Hamihya

The Proper Text of Al Hamihya
Day: Monday
Date: May 23, 2016
Parshat: Behar
Yalkut Yosef: O"H: 208

The proper way to end off the me'en shalosh with the insert for mezonot is "Baruch atah HaShem al ha'aretz ve'al hamihya." It is improper to add words and end off with "al ha'aretz ve'al hamihya ve'al hakalkalah" as is printed in many suddurim. Even if one's custom has always been to say "ve'al hakalkalah," still it is proper to leave that part out and only say "al ha'aretz ve'al hamihya." However, one who for the line before the last wants to say "venodeh lecha HaShem Elokeinu al ha'aretz ve'al hamihya" instead of "venodeh lecha al ha'aretz ve'al hamihya" may do so.

Inserts Added to Me'en Shalosh

Inserts Added to Me'en Shalosh
Day: Sunday
Date: May 22, 2016
Parshat: Behar
Yalkut Yosef: O"H: 208

On Shabbat and Yom Tov a special insert is added to me'en shalosh to commemorate the day. One who forgot to insert it goes back and says it as long as he hasn't yet said HaShem's name at the end of the beracha. In that case he should say the insert when he remembers and then continue on with "ki atah tov..." However if he already said HaShem's name he finishes off the beracha and does not go back. On Hannuka and Purim no insert is added. However, if one did add an insert anyhow he does not say the beracha again.

May One Who Ate Mezonot and Wine Say the After Beracha for One Who Had Only Wine

May One Who Ate Mezonot and Wine Say the After Beracha for One Who Had Only Wine
Day: Friday
Date: May 20, 2016
Parshat: Emor
Yalkut Yosef: O"H: 208

One who ate enough of two different foods to say me'en shalosh with the inserts for mezonot and fruit for example, may include to someone else in his beracha even if the other person only needs to say it on mezonot. For example, if Reuven was at a kiddush and had enough wine to al hagefen and also had enough cake to say al hamihya, Shimon, who had cake but no wine may listen to his me'en shalosh and be yotze with that even though he is only required to say al hamihya and not al hagefen.
